On March 10, 2025, the North Sea Collision between MV Solong and MV Stena Immaculate occurred approximately 14 nautical miles northeast of Spurn Head, near the Humber Estuary in England. This incident involved the Portuguese-registered container ship Solong and the U.S.-registered tanker Stena Immaculate, resulting in significant environmental damage and one fatality. Incident Timeline and Immediate Impact of the North Sea Collision

At around 09:47 UTC, MV Solong collided directly with the anchored MV Stena Immaculate at a speed of 16 knots. The tanker had anchored in an informal area managed by Associated British Ports (ABP), commonly used but not officially marked on nautical charts. The collision ruptured one of Stena Immaculate’s cargo tanks, spilling Jet A-1 aviation fuel onto Solong’s bow and the surrounding sea. The fuel ignited instantly, leading to a significant fire on both ships.

Tragically, the collision resulted in the presumed death of Able Seaman Mark Pernia from Solong. Nearby vessels and HM Coastguard successfully rescued the other 36 crew members.

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) identified several critical factors contributing to the incident:

  • No Dedicated Lookouts: Neither vessel had a dedicated lookout during the collision, violating international maritime safety standards (COLREG Rule 5).
  • Poor Visibility and High Speed: Despite limited visibility conditions ranging from 0.25 to 2 nautical miles, Solong did not slow down or take evasive action.
  • Watchkeeping Issues: The master of Solong stood watch alone from 07:00 UTC until the collision, raising concerns about fatigue and inadequate staffing.
  • Unofficial Anchorage: Stena Immaculate anchored in an area that was not officially designated, creating navigation risks.

Environmental and Legal Consequences

The collision led to serious environmental concerns, as aviation fuel and plastic pellets (nurdles) spilled into the North Sea. Although initial aerial surveys indicated limited severe pollution, long-term environmental effects remain uncertain.

Legally, Captain Vladimir Motin of the Solong faces charges of gross negligence manslaughter. Authorities scheduled his trial for January 2026, highlighting the incident’s severity.
