Accessing Shiretoko might seem daunting due to its remote location, but it’s more straightforward than expected.

In order to get there

Regular domestic flights from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) and Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport (CTS) to Memanbetsu Airport (MMB) make the journey relatively easy.

From Memanbetsu, a scenic drive or a two-hour bus ride brings you to Utoro, the western gateway to the park.

For those keen on seeing the Shiretoko violet bloom, late June to early July is ideal.

Summer months (July to September) bring warm weather, thawed mountain paths, and peak bear activity, making it a prime time for hiking and wildlife spotting.

Fall transforms the landscape with fiery foliage along the Shiretoko Pass, while winter invites visitors to experience the magical drift-ice walks and snowshoeing adventures.

Exploring the Nature of Shiretoko

One of the park’s highlights is Shiretoko Goko, or the Shiretoko Five Lakes. These volcano-formed lakes, set against a backdrop of green forests and mountain peaks, offer stunning views and serene walking trails.

The Shiretoko Pass, connecting Utoro with Rausu, provides one of the most scenic drives in Japan, though it’s closed in winter because of snowfall.

For a unique experience, visit Furepe Falls, a rare cascade fed by groundwater rather than a river, or soak in the natural outdoor onsen at Kamuiwakka Hot Falls.

Wildlife

Shiretoko is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, in addition, The park is home to the Ezo brown bear, most active during the summer months, as well as orcas and porpoises in the Nemuro Strait from April onwards.

Winter visitors can witness seals on the ice floes and white-tailed eagles diving for fish. The diverse fauna of Shiretoko offers a glimpse into Japan’s natural heritage.
