Visiting Mexico is a journey into a land of vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and rich history.

Whether you’re exploring the bustling streets of Mexico City, relaxing on the beaches of Cancun, or discovering ancient ruins, there are a few things every traveler should know when they visit Mexico.

Here are 9 Things to Know About Visiting Mexico to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

1. Learn Basic Spanish

While many people in tourist areas speak English, learning basic Spanish phrases like “hola” (hello), “gracias” (thank you), and “dónde está el baño?” (where is the restroom?) can go a long way.

Apps like Duolingo or Babbel offer easy ways to pick up some key phrases for visiting Mexico.

2. Get a Tourist Card

U.S. citizens don’t need a visa for stays under 180 days, but you will need a tourist card (FMM) when visiting Mexico.

This can be obtained online before your trip or at the airport upon arrival.

Keep this card with you as you may need to present it when leaving the country.

3. Use Pesos for Transactions

While U.S. dollars are accepted in many tourist areas, using Mexican pesos can be more convenient and save you money.

ATMs are widely available, and withdrawing pesos from an ATM usually gives you the best exchange rate when visiting Mexico.

4. Stay Safe While Exploring

Like any destination, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take basic safety precautions when visiting Mexico.

Stick to well-populated areas, avoid displaying wealth, and be cautious when using ATMs.

For up-to-date safety information, refer to the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisory for Mexico.

5. Try Local Food Specialties

Mexican cuisine is diverse and delicious. Don’t miss out on street food like tacos, tamales, and churros.

Also, try regional specialties such as mole in Oaxaca or cochinita pibil in the Yucatan.

Be cautious with street food to avoid stomach issues, and drink bottled or filtered water when visiting Mexico.

6. Understand Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is customary in Mexico. In restaurants, a tip of 10-15% of the bill is standard.

For other services, such as hotel staff or taxi drivers, small tips are appreciated.

Always have some cash handy for tips when visiting Mexico.

7. Embrace the Local Culture

Mexicans are known for their warm hospitality. Embrace the local customs, such as greeting people with a handshake or kiss on the cheek, and use polite phrases like “por favor” (please) and “gracias” (thank you).

Understanding cultural norms will enrich your experience when visiting Mexico.

8. Plan for Mexico’s Diverse Weather

Mexico’s climate varies greatly depending on the region. The coastal areas are typically warm and humid, while inland areas can be cooler, especially in the evenings.

Pack accordingly and check the weather forecast for your specific destination when visiting Mexico.

9. Explore Beyond Tourist Spots

While popular destinations like Cancun and Cabo San Lucas are beautiful, don’t miss the chance to explore lesser-known areas when visiting Mexico.

Visit colonial cities like Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende, or the natural beauty of places like Chiapas and Baja California sur. These areas offer unique experiences and fewer crowds.

Mexico

Visiting Mexico with its rich culture, friendly people, and stunning landscapes is a destination that offers something for every traveler. By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy all that this incredible country has to offer. ¡Buen viaje!
