Located in the vast expanse of the western Pacific Ocean, Yap is a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural richness within the Federated States of Micronesia.

This remote island, often overlooked, boasts tropical forest trails, unique 13-foot stone currency, and some of the most breathtakingly turquoise waters you’ll ever see.

For travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Yap offers an unparalleled escape. Let’s dive into how to get to Yap, what to do on this secluded haven, and where to eat and stay.

Getting to Yap

Reaching Yap requires a bit of plane hopping, but the journey is worth every minute. Most travelers start their adventure from major hubs like Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Hawaii or Narita International Airport (NRT) in Japan. They then connect through Antonio B.

Won Pat International Airport (GUM) in Guam. From Guam, a late-night flight will land you at Yap International Airport (YAP) in about 95 minutes. This remote location ensures that Yap remains a pristine and uncrowded destination.

Best Things to Do on Yap

Explore the Marine Wonders

Yap is framed by a stunning coral reef teeming with tropical fish, manta rays, giant clams, and even sharks. The island’s diverse marine ecosystem and crystal-clear waters make it a haven for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.

Whether you’re exploring the underwater world or relaxing on nearly empty sandy beaches, the island’s coastal beauty is unrivaled.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

For those who prefer land-based activities, the Tamilyog Trail is a must. This trail connects the east and west of Yap, meandering through dense forests and highlands, and offering coastal viewpoints. The hike takes about two hours and is an excellent way to immerse yourself in Yap’s lush landscape. Additionally, shorter scenic hikes around Colonia provide equally enchanting views for those with less time.

Yap’s rich cultural heritage is another significant draw. Visitors can embark on excursions aboard hand-hewn outrigger canoes with local guides to gain deeper insights into Yapese traditions. The Yap Living History Museum in Colonia showcases traditional dances, handicrafts, weaving, and storytelling, offering a window into the island’s past.

Discover the Stone Money

One of Yap’s most fascinating cultural aspects is its stone money, known as rai. These doughnut-shaped limestone disks, varying from a few centimeters to 13 feet in diameter, are scattered across the island and hold significant social and ceremonial value.

Visiting the villages where these ancient currencies are displayed offers a unique glimpse into the island’s history.

Best Places to Eat and Drink on Yap

Yap’s culinary scene is defined by fresh produce and seafood. At the Oceania Hotel restaurant, the daily changing chalkboard menu reflects the availability of local ingredients, with dishes like blackened tuna and spicy octopus.

Meanwhile, Mnuw Restaurant & Nautical Bar offers a delightful dining experience aboard a 170-foot phinisi schooner, with crowd-pleasing food and microbrews from Stone Money Brewing Company.

Manta Ray Bay Resort

This family-owned hotel features ocean-themed rooms, an intimate spa using local ingredients, a floating restaurant, and VIP diving excursions, making it a top choice for luxury travelers.
