Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt is preparing to sell his yacht, Legend. Ponant Cruise Lines is the reported buyer, with a deal expected by October 2025. The yacht is currently in Bermuda, where increased broker activity suggests things are moving quickly.

Why This Vessel Still Stands Out

Legend didn’t start as a yacht. Built in 1974 in the Netherlands, it served as a Soviet icebreaking tug. Its reinforced hull still allows it to navigate extreme polar routes.

In 2003, the ship was converted into a superyacht and renamed Motor Yacht Giant. Then in 2015, Icon Yachts refitted it again. They extended the stern, added a swim platform, and built a helicopter landing pad. Now, Legend carries 22 guests in 11 cabins and runs with a crew of 28.

Because of these changes, the yacht offers a mix of power, history, and luxury. That’s rare.

Why Schmidt Is Letting Go

Eric Schmidt has owned several large vessels, including Alpha Nero. Legend has been one of his most reliable yachts, in part due to strong crew retention. Under his ownership, the crew earned competitive pay and stayed long term.

Now, Schmidt is preparing for his next yacht, a 107-meter project called Incognita. It’s under construction in Spain and should be ready by 2026. Since Incognita isn’t ready yet, only the senior crew has been assigned. Schmidt reportedly won’t transfer the Legend crew, which leaves their future uncertain.

Ponant Cruise Lines

Ponant Cruise Lines focuses on small, upscale expeditions. It operates several custom-built ships, including Le Commandant Charcot, which sails in polar regions using hybrid-electric power.

Legend fits Ponant’s model. Its ice-class certification allows it to travel in remote destinations. Its small guest capacity also supports Ponant’s emphasis on intimate experiences. For them, this isn’t about size—it’s about access and exclusivity.

The company used a similar strategy in 2019 when it bought Paul Gauguin Cruises. That vessel now runs refined trips in French Polynesia. A similar future could be ahead for Legend.

What Might Change After the Sale

If the sale closes in October 2025, Legend could re-enter service by early 2026. Ponant may refit the ship to match its branding and guest experience. This could include updated interiors or structural changes to accommodate new itineraries.

Crew contracts will also shift. Schmidt’s team will be released at the time of sale, and Ponant will offer new agreements. Depending on the terms, some may stay. Others may leave, especially if conditions change. This transition will shape how the vessel performs under new leadership.

The deal between Legend and Ponant Cruise Lines marks a major moment for both sides. Schmidt moves on to his new project, while Ponant gains a vessel that’s already proven in both luxury and exploration.
