The Neom mega project in Saudi Arabia is currently consuming 20% of the world’s steel production. This makes it the largest consumer of construction materials on the planet.
The project’s massive scale will drive both the construction and logistics industries for decades. Manar Al Moneef, Neom’s Chief Investment Officer, highlighted this at the Global Logistics Forum in Riyadh. She explained that the project’s demand for steel and other materials is reshaping the global market.

Neom Mega Project Drives Global Logistics
The Neom mega project accounts for 5% of the global logistics market. This demand for steel, cement, and elevators places Neom at the forefront of global construction. “Neom is using 20% of the world’s steel, making us the largest customer for construction materials for years”, said Al Moneef during her address at the forum.

Financial Guarantees and Major Projects
Neom’s $500 billion development includes high-profile projects like The Line, a 170-kilometer linear city. A 5-kilometer section is set for completion by 2030. Other components include the Trojena winter resort, Sindalah island resort, and the industrial city Oxagon. The Saudi government has provided financial guarantees to attract private investors and ensure the project’s success.
The region’s broader vision for growth aligns with other projects, such as Abu Dhabi’s new sphere, which also seeks to transform the area into a global hub for business and tourism.
Challenges and Delays Amid Other Priorities
The Neom mega project has faced delays due to funding challenges. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) shifted resources toward Riyadh for the World Expo 2030 and the 2034 World Cup. Despite this, experts believe that Neom will continue to be a priority in the coming years.
Long-Term Vision for Growth
The Neom mega project will impact the global economy for decades, thanks to its massive demand for construction materials. Dhiraj Joshi, a partner at Arthur D Little Middle East, explained that Neom’s long-term investment strategy will shape global markets well into the future.
