Reaction Engines, the UK-based company behind the hypersonic jet project, faced administration after failing to secure the necessary £20 million funding. The hypersonic jet aimed to reduce London-to-New York flights to just 60 minutes, a project once celebrated as a leap in UK hypersonic innovation.
The End of the UK’s High-Speed Aviation Aspirations
Reaction Engines’ collapse is a setback for the UK’s aerospace goals, particularly around hypersonic travel. The company’s groundbreaking SABRE (Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine) technology was designed to reach 4,000 mph (Mach 5), combining jet and rocket propulsion. This hybrid approach held the potential to make hypersonic travel commercially viable.

Groundbreaking Advances Now Paused
At the Colorado Air and Space Port, Reaction Engines achieved significant milestones, successfully testing SABRE at Mach 5 conditions. Co-founder Richard Varvill described this as a landmark step, validating the technology for extreme speeds. By achieving these results, the company hoped to realize a “Son of Concorde” for commercial flight.
Competition Continues in High-Speed Air Travel
Despite Reaction Engines’ setback, the global race for hypersonic travel persists. UK hypersonic development, once a competitive player, now faces rivalry from Boom Technology’s “Overture,” projected to fly at Mach 1.7 by 2029. Industry momentum remains high, showcasing international commitment to the future of high-speed air travel.
